Writers’ Centres
Writers’ centres have become popular and continue to grow for a number of reasons. For a start, they can introduce readers and new writers to a community of folk who share their same interests and aspirations, and provide them with a meeting place. This meeting place can be a room in a building somewhere or it can be virtual. Often it’s both.
The advantages don’t stop there, however. Being part of a writers’ centre allows people to promote and share their work, receive advice and guidance, and also to champion the work of others.
Most writers’ centres are hubs for writing groups in a variety of genres, be it crime, romance SF, fantasy or anything the imagination can come up with. These centres will also hold or be a part of major literary events, giving its members the chance to meet published authors, agents and publishers.
Finally, writers’ centres are great repositories of knowledge. Its staff and members will know a lot about the publishing industry and what opportunities exist, and how to go about trying to make the most of these. You’ll also have access to a variety of short or longer courses in professional development, and these are always run by leading practitioners in their fields—that is, by people who have the experience to help you achieve your writing goals.
