How to sell ebooks

We are not experts at selling books, however we have been around in the industry long enough to get some basic ideas about what it takes to sell ebooks. No two marketing plans should be the same, but here is a very basic list to help get you thinking about how to sell your book:

Your Readers

  • Think about your readers. What do they want from a book? Where do they buy books from? Who influences them?
  • What ebook devices are being used and HOW are they being used for your type of books?

Your Online Platform

  • Distribution on major platforms like Apple and Amazon, as well as utilising author tools they provide, getting readers to provide feedback etc.
  • A website and blog, custom designed and using a unique domain name
  • Social media. Concentrate on 2 or 3 you feel comfortable with. Eg. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Or Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. Or whatever combination suits you (and where your target market can be found).
  • Email newsletters - if you can gather people onto a list by offering them professional advice or writing and publishing tips

Unless you're very active and have a lot of time to get in the mix with your readers, to begin with, advertising may be the only way to gain more followers/readers/visitors to your online platform.

Offline Marketing Ideas

  • Launch
  • Events and speaking
  • Media releases
  • Direct marketing (eg. letterbox drops, if appropriate)
  • Advertising in key offline sources
  • Personal selling
