How to self publish a book

Every self publishing project should be done in careful stages:

Write and Edit

  1. Write, rewrite, write more drafts, get to a draft version 1
  2. Read it. Read it aloud. Read it to the target market if possible or have one of them read it.
  3. Send to friends, family, other writers, teachers (anyone relevant) for their opinion. These are beta-readers
  4. Read and self-edit again, rewrite, get to version 2 draft
  5. Send to a professional editor
  6. Accept or reject changes, rewrite, get to draft 3
  7. Back to editor
  8. Go through changes, get to version 4 draft
  9. Read it through. If you have time read it aloud again. During any reading feel free to make more changes, final tweaks etc. Create version 5 draft. Your masterpiece is nearly ready for production!
  10. Back to editor to check final changes (ideally another edit start to finish if you can afford it.) Get editor's approval to move to production

Book Production

  1. Decide on printing options, choose printer, get preliminary quotes
  2. Get print design done by a professional book designer (allow 2-4 months+ depending on your book and any content changes will add to this)
  3. Do a layout proof on the print layout (optionally proofread it, but bear in mind your designer will charge for any content changes at this stage and it will undo much of their hard work on spacing, widows, orphans etc.)
  4. Get firm printing quotes
  5. (Note 5 and 6 can be switched around as long as no changes are occurring)
  6. Make print layout ready for printer and submit (allow 60-90 days for copies from overseas, allow 7-21 days for print on demand titles to arrive)
  7. Convert final print design to ebook (allow 2 months+ depending on your book and your method of making an ebook. Remember quick and nasty options result in poorer quality for your readers to judge you by)
