About the book

How to Heal a Bad Birth is a gentle guide for women who have experienced a difficult, disappointing or traumatic birth, and want to make sense, make peace and move on. Written by the founders of Birthtalk.org™, this book works double-time as an indispensable resource for partners, family and health professionals, enabling them to offer meaningful support for a woman in this situation.

This ground-breaking self-help book takes the reader on a ‘choose your own adventure’ style of healing journey… because every woman’s path to healing will be different. The pages are filled with heartfelt quotes from women, facts and insights about birth trauma, and ideas for dealing with common emotions that arise such as sadness, guilt, feelings of failure, anger and partner issues. There are step-by-step tools for healing, plus immense support and compassion contained within these pages. Say the authors : “Since 2002 we’ve been working with women after a traumatic birth in our ‘Healing From Birth’ support sessions. Because we’ve see the impact birth can have, we are gentle with women’s hearts as they step forward and acknowledge that they are ready to take the journey to healing. And we are with you all the way.”

Often women are told to ‘just get over it’, or ‘healthy mother, healthy baby... that’s all that matters.’ We know it’s not that simple, and that your emotional health matters too.

This book offers ideas and tools to:

• explore & process the emotional impact of your birth
• strengthen your relationship with your partner
• reconnect with your child
• deal with feelings such as failure, guilt, sadness, or anger
• begin to plan for a better birth next time

The book is peppered with honest and heartfelt insights from women and men supported by Birthtalk.org™ over the years, as they share their experiences in their own healing journeys. Join the hundreds of women who have used these tools to make sense, make peace, and move on from a bad birth.

About the Author

Melissa Bruijn and Debby Gould are the founders of Birthtalk.org. Since 2002, through Birthtalk.org, they have specialised in ‘moving on after a bad birth’, and provided unique and essential support to those impacted by a difficult, disappointing or traumatic birth. Debby trained as a midwife, and is now a childbirth educator and doula, and mother of two. Melissa is a mum of three who had a traumatic experience with her first birth and felt the full impact of this, before healing and moving on. She has since had two empowering and positive births. Debby and Melissa are also family. As sisters-in-law they have seen first-hand how a traumatic birth can impact upon the early months and years of parenting, and were inspired to create Birthtalk.org with the desire that no other family should experience such isolation, desperation and confusion after a birth. This book is the realisation of their dream to spread their understanding, information and proven tools about healing as widely as possible.
