Audiobook production and distribution in Australia

It’s an exciting time for audiobooks. Until recently, the audiobook market was mostly limited to US-based businesses and traditionally published titles, but now anyone can produce one for their book.

Through Australian eBook Publisher, it is now accessible and affordable to produce your own audiobook!

  1. What is an audiobook?
An audiobook is a standalone audio format of a book that is tied to a reading product. Audiobooks are separate from their ebook counterparts, and allow you to seamlessly switch between reading and listening via Whispersynch for voice.

As long as there is an ebook edition of your book available on Amazon (whether or not we converted and distributed it) we can organise the audio narration of your book or work with your supplied audio files and distribute your audiobook. Your files must be made to Audible’s specifications. (More information below in ‘Audio Narration Organised by You’.).

All prices are shown in AUD, and GST will be added to each invoice to Australian-based customers.

Audible Distribution
Australian eBook Publisher can distribute the book exclusively through Audible, which includes distribution on Amazon and Apple iTunes via Audible. If you choose this exclusive option, we expect to receive 40% of the sale price. The final sales figures will also be affected by the exchange rates, taxes and bank fees. If you choose option one (see prices below), you receive 85% of the net receipts (the amount left over after the 40% has been taken by Audible), as we keep 15% to cover our time managing the file for you. There is an additional exclusive option for a higher price in which you’ll receive 95% of the net receipts.

You can also choose a non-exclusive option, which will allow you to reach some smaller audiobook distributors such as Google, Findaway, etc. However, if you choose the non-exclusive option, we will only expect to receive 25% of the sale price from Audible. Even though you receive 100% of the net receipts with this option, the return is still likely to be lower than either of the exclusive options.

To give you some idea of the kind of return you will get on your book, let’s say the price of your audiobook is set at $21.95. After the royalty of 40% is taken by the distributor, that leaves $8.78. After we take our 15%, that leaves $7.46. If you opt for the non-exclusive arrangement, that amount will drop to $5.48. We don’t take a cut from non-exclusive arrangements, although the cost to upload if you choose this arrangement is higher, but you will still stand to make a higher profit on an exclusive arrangement than a non-exclusive one.

The majority of audiobook sales come through Audible and its affiliates. Over one quarter recently, we received $2045 from 882 Audible sales compared with $322 from 109 sales on other vendors for a select group of audiobooks with non-exclusive distribution. So exclusivity is definitely an option worth considering.

Audiobook Publishing Prices
How much does it cost to publish an audiobook? Aside from the varying prices for narration, we offer three options:

Exclusive to Audible, Amazon & Apple
$199+GST – we will upload your files and manage the book there for you. You will receive 85% of the net receipts.

Non-exclusive to Audible
$349+GST – we will upload your files and manage the book on Audible, Apple, Amazon, Google, Kobo, Scribd, Baker & Taylor, Ebsco, Wheelers plus other worldwide audiobook providers for you. You will receive 100% of the net receipts.

Supply own MP3
You will have to supply the recording as per Audible’s specifications. This includes things like having the title, author and name of the narrator read out at the beginning, etc. There are certain rules and technical specifications that we will expect your recording to adhere to. We will also need to have the narrator’s name supplied to us in written form so we can make sure the spelling is correct when we supply it to Audible.

We provide customer support with your audio file at our standard hourly rate.

If Audible rejects your files for any reason, we charge hourly from that point to continue working on your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

I will do my own voice recording. Is that OK? What do I do?
If you possess the necessary talent to do your own professional voice recording, but you would like us to handle the distribution, we can do that. We can provide the specifications and can support you at our hourly rate if you’re not able to meet these specifications.

As we do not have an audio recording studio on-site, in order to provide professional audiobook narration services in Australia, we work with professionals who know how to do an excellent job and understand what the audiobook specifications mean.

Why do we only get 40% of the pre-tax sale price and only 25% for non-exclusive?
It is common in all forms of product distribution, physical and electronic, to have to share part of your sale price and/or pay other organisations in the distribution chain. For its part in distributing your book, Amazon Audible and its partners retain 60% of the sale price (in exclusive arrangements).

I am a voice artist, actor or narrator—do you want my services?
Please do not call. However, you're welcome to contact us to email your website link or a link to your demo reel.

How will my audiobook be displayed alongside my print or ebook?
We’re sometimes asked something like, 'Will the audiobook be a tab on the same Amazon book page (next to the 'kindle' tab and the 'paperback' tab), or will it be listed on a separate page on Amazon?'

To see how an audiobook looks on Amazon, please see our audiobook Creating Trauma-Informed, Strengths-Based Classrooms. You can see it, along with all editions, in a little box which is like a tab. Amazon sorts this out automatically as long as the title meta-data is the same for all versions of a book (print, ebook, audiobook).
