Ryde Band – The History of a Most Desirable Institution Book Design

Author: Helen Brayshaw
Print ISBN: 978-0-6455607-9-4

About the project

This book was proofread by Lynne, one of the editors at Australian eBook Publisher. Amanda then set it out in InDesign for print and converted it to ebook. The author had some great ideas about how she wanted the brand colours to be used and this brief was followed in the design. The images were from archival sources, so were not generally good quality, so a fair amount of Photoshopping was required to bring them up to print quality.

Amanda Greenslade did the cover design and print design of the interior of the book followed by an ebook conversion. Members of the band will enjoy this keepsake of a most desirable institution and a joy in their lives.

About the book

Ryde Band has been in existence for more than half of the 230 year life of Ryde itself. The band was created by Ryde Municipal Council members, and its first rehearsals were held in the council chambers. Since that time, many members of our community have enjoyed hearing and playing in the band.

This book is a well-researched, comprehensive history which reflects the band's identity and fortunes which have been closely entwined with those of Ryde itself, as the area progressed from municipality to city.

The band’s continued existence is due in no small part to support by Council over the years. The relationship is reciprocal, as the band supports Council events wherever possible, and adds to the cultural vibrancy of the City of Ryde. It performs for members of the community at special events, and monthly for shoppers at
Eastwood.

All members of the band are volunteers and pay to belong. They practice together every week, for the joy of playing music and sharing it with members of our wider community.

About the Author

As a longstanding member of the Ryde Band, Helen became intrigued by the unknown aspects of the band’s past life. She found that researching the history of a community band lends itself to similar ambitions as to work she had done on earlier projects. In seeking to make the people of Ryde aware of aspects of their community’s past previously unknown to them, her aim is to give new meaning and attachment to the place where they live and an appreciation of the contribution to their community by those who have gone before. Not least to be aware of the experience of the Wallumedegal, the people on whose country this story continues to take place.
